JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a language-independent, widely adopted, open standard format used for data exchange between applications and services. Microsoft SQL Server introduced JSON support in SQL Server 2016, with further enhancements added in SQL Server 2022. Now, with the release of SQL Server 2025, are we finally at the point where JSON receives the full support it deserves? SQL 2025 brings long-awaited features such as a native JSON data type, JSON indexing, and other critical improvements that fill the gaps and help complete the story. In this session, we'll explore the evolution and current state of JSON support in MS SQL Server—accompanied by numerous practical examples demonstrating its usage and capabilities.
