Digital Defense Abroad: Essential Cybersecurity for Travelers

International travel can expose personal and business information through device loss, unfamiliar networks, and physical access to phones and laptops. The precautions needed depend on the destination, the information being carried, and the traveler's potential exposure to targeted threats. Drawing on his experience as a cybersecurity expert and UN Master, Michael Noel examines practical ways to protect your data and devices while traveling, including in remote and higher-risk destinations. This session covers travel-only phones and laptops, VPN selection and limitations, encrypted communications, account protection, and considerations when using local SIMs and eSIMs. We'll also examine how to prepare devices for border crossings, research local requirements, limit information stored on devices or accessible through signed-in accounts, and respond to a lost or potentially compromised device. Attendees will leave with practical operational security practices to apply before departure, during a trip, and after returning home. - Assess travel risks and prepare devices and accounts with appropriate security settings and only the information needed for the trip. - Evaluate VPNs, encrypted communications, travel-only devices, and SIM or eSIM options for different travel situations. - Apply operational security practices at borders and throughout a trip, including responding to device loss, inspection, or suspected compromise.
